General Linguistics

Modern linguistics is the scientific study of all aspects of the world’s languages from their sound systems and grammatical structure through to the interaction of language with culture, the study of meaning in language, and the use of language in modern technology. Linguistics explores both the mysteries of language today and the question of how languages arise over the centuries. It is a course about the human mind and how the human mind uses language and passes it on to later generations.
Topics including Micro and Macro-linguistics, basic distinctions, linguistics theories, and schools of linguistics thought, in addition to universal properties of language will be addressed. The course will also cover a large number of special terms and concepts. This course is intended to provide Higher Diploma students with a broader context on linguistics and help them synthesize their linguistic knowledge.
